For those who are inexperienced with wigs, or for those who are beginners looking to learn more about them, we wanted to offer a little insight on how to tell whether a wig is high quality or not. Keep reading to get some background knowledge!
- Read Reviews
Before ordering anything, we suggest reading the reviews, if there are any. If there are no online reviews, talk to friends, family, and even those you run into at the hair store or work. People who have tried the brand before or has more knowledge regarding the subject. If the product has at least four starts, you should be in the clear. Just know, every brand won’t be perfect, but if it works for you, that’s what matters!

- Feel The Hair
Of course this depends on whether the hair you’re looking to purchase is in stores or not, but if it is, this is a great way to tell whether the wig or hair extensions are high quality. Simply, run your fingers through the hair multiple times. Does it feel smooth, or coarse? Keep in mind, if the hair is a kinkier texture, it’ll likely be coarse, but coarse hair extensions that are good quality will still
Have a soft feel. On the other hand, if the hair feels coarse or rough, it is likely that the extensions won’t last very long.

- Check The Ends
Are the ends split? Do they nap up at the bottom? Does it thin as it gets closer to the bottom? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, chances are the hair is low quality. To resemble natural hair, sometimes the hair will split at the ends or throughout, but not dramatically. If you are checking out the ends and they seema bit kinkier at the bottom, in a way that does not blend well with the rest of the hair extensions, this could be a flaw in the quality. If the hair extensions are noticeably thinner at the bottom, this could also be a result of low quality hair extensions. (The examples shown above are examples of high quality hair extensions).

- Is it Synthetic or Human Hair, or a Blend?
(Left: Synthetic Hair) This is one of the primary questions you should ask yourself when making a hair extensions purchase. If the wig is synthetic, it will likely have a naturally shiny appearance, and look great when it is first purchased. Overtime, it will likely matte up, and this is due to synthetic hair not lasting a while in general. Synthetic hair cannot withstand high heat, and should rarely be washed -- thus, leading to matting as well. Synthetic wigs are best used for short-term hair
extension solutions. If the hair extensions are human hair, it is likely that they are high quality. (Right: Synthetic & Human Hair Blend) However, there are different qualities of hair extensions, and not every level is “high quality.” Some hairstylists say there are grades of hair, and some think otherwise, but certainly, there is a different feel for hair that is high quality hair. Human hair can be raw, virgin or Remy. This type of hair can last up to two years or more with proper care. So, when deciding which type of hair to get, we recommend human hair -- shop with us at Lustro Hair! Before we more on, we must also discuss the human hair blend. This is simply a blend of human hair and synthetic hair. This hair is great for on-and-off wear of hair extensions. Meaning, not wearing it everyday, but every now and then, such as a backup alternative. Usually, there will be a little bit of coarseness and smoothness with this hair, which is completely normal.

- How Much Does It Cost?
This is also a leading factor in determining whether the hair extensions you are interested in purchasing are high quality. Typically, if the hair extensions are under $100, they may either be synthetic or a human hair-synthetic blend, which won’t be very high in quality. However, if they are at least $100+, you’re likely getting better quality hair. Note: Not ALL hair extensions over $100 will be good quality, again, there are levels to this, sis. Hair can be expensive, and the better the quality, the more the hair extensions will cost. Remember, hair extensions are an investment. Hair can be as expensive as $1000+, but may last up to five years. If you are a beginner, we recommend starting out with something less expensive, and maybe even with synthetic wigs, or human hair blends. As you get more familiar with the products, you will know which hair is high quality, and what works best for you!

6*. Where Can I Find It?
Now, this question can be hit or miss, so take this information with a grain of salt. Many people say that if you find your hair extensions in a beauty supply store, the quality won’t be great. However, this is not always the case. Many beauty supply stores carry the same hair extensions that other brands are selling -- meaning it’s coming from the same place, and sometimes even the same vendor. You can tell by using this checklist, whether or not the hair will hold up. The more expensive the beauty supply store hair is, the more likely it will long. Remember, take this piece of advice with caution.
