A History of Hair (Extensions): From Weaves to Wigs to What Else? | Lustro Hair's 100% Virgin & Remy Extensions

So you want some inches, but don’t know much about—or how best to get—them. I’m sure that all of us, at the beginning of our extension journey, have been there. Let’s talk then about what hair extensions are, including the different types that are available. This way you can get a sense of what may work well for you!

What are hair extensions?

Hair extensions, also known as “artificial hair integrations,” are pieces of hair that add length and fullness to natural human hair. Hair extensions can be clipped, glued, sewn, or taped by incorporating additional human or synthetic hair.

Where did they originate?

Hair extensions became a fashion trend in the 17th century. Flash forward to 1950, and “weaves” had became a common staple among celebrities. Since then, the types, styles and colors of hair extensions have continued to grow. Today, most hair extensions come from Asian countries, such as China and India.

Why are they so popular?

Those who get hair extensions typically do so to change up their look. By adding longer hair for length or more hair for volume (or both!), they can get creative and alter their appearance for a period of time.

Hairstyles are easy to change by covering your natural hair with either real human or synthetic pieces. Consumers also are able to try a different hair texture than their own when wearing extensions because the natural hair is protected underneath. In addition to playing with appearance, hair extensions allow you to add color without risk of damaging your real hair. So let your inner diva shine and add some color for a nice boost!
